ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s soccer team will travel to Collegeville, Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon for a 4 p.m. battle with Saint John’s University. The Gusties bring a 5-3-3 overall and 0-3-3 MIAC record into the contest, while the Johnnies, who are ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA North rankings, currently stand at 9-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the MIAC.

Gustavus is most recently coming off a 1-1 double overtime tie with Augsburg College this past Saturday in St. Peter. The Gusties took an early lead when Patrick Roth (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) was able to head in a free kick from fellow Stillwater native Eli Bjerk just 4:25 into the game to give the home squad a 1-0 lead. However, the Auggies knotted the score up at one goal apiece when Abdullah Alshayba was able to find the clear and boot his first goal of the season at the 70:50 mark. Following Augsburg’s goal, the Gusties were able to get three shots off, including one on goal, before time expired in regulation, but could not find the net. Gustavus also held a 3-2 advantage in shots during both overtime periods.

“Despite the wind, we were very good in possession, creating a number of good entries into the attacking third,” said Coach Mike Middleton of Saturday’s game. “You can see what we’re trying to do, we are just struggling to put the ball in the back of the net, yet still playing really well.”

Saint John’s comes into the game after moving into first place in the MIAC standings with a 1-0 win against Bethel on Saturday in Arden Hills. Sophomore Daniel Bruckbauer made his first start of the season and scored the game-winning goal for the Johnnies in the 61st minute, while senior goalkeeper Kevin Lebahn made two saves to improve to 9-1-2 on the season and earn his third shutout of the fall. The Johnnies outshot the Royals 14-4, including a 4-2 mark on goal, and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Gustavus and Saint John’s played twice last season and split their meetings. The Johnnies earned a 1-0 double overtime victory over the Gusties in the two teams’ regular season game in St. Peter, however, Gustavus rebounded to take a 2-0 win over Saint John’s in the MIAC Playoff Championship game, which sent the Black and Gold to the NCAA National Tournament.

Saturday’s meeting will be the 63rd meeting between Gustavus and Saint John’s in men’s soccer. The Gusties hold the advantage in the all-time series with a 27-22-13 record against the Johnnies and are 2-2 the past two seasons against their foes from Collegeville.
