COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Saint John’s University on Wednesday afternoon at Haws Field. The loss drops the Gusties to 5-4-3 overall and 0-4-3 in MIAC play, while Saint John’s built its conference lead to two points, and is now 10-1-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the conference.

“It was another very tight game today,” said Coach Mike Middleton. “Our lads had the majority of the possession again, but were not able to capitalize. This was certainly a game we thought we could have taken.”

The Johnnies scored the game’s only goal just 14 minutes into the game when Saint Johns’ Cole Howard threw a long throw-in pass to teammate Dylan Lehrer who was able to score on a header to the far post. The goal was Lehrer’s first of the season and would be all the home team would need to remain undefeated on its home field in 2015.

Saint John’s outshot Gustavus 19-7 and also had the advantage on corner kicks by a 10-3 margin.

Matt Bateman (Savage, Minn.) suffered the defeat between the posts for Gustavus. The first-year goalie allowed just the one goal, while making four saves to move his record to 0-1-2 on the year.

The Gusties will return home on Saturday when they take on Bethel (4-7-2, 1-4-1 MIAC) at 1 p.m. on the Gustie Soccer Field.
