COON RAPIDS, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team sits in third place following the opening round of the MIAC Championships, which are being held at Bunker Hills Golf Course. The Gusties turned in a team score of 304 (+16), just three strokes behind second place University of St. Thomas. Augsburg College leads the field with a score of 292 (+4).
“I figured with the way the wind was today, 300 would keep us in the thick of it,” said Coach Scott Moe. “Augsburg put up a great number today, but I’m confident we’ll rebound tomorrow with a really good number as well. We got off to a great start and had a great finish, we just need to clean up a couple of things through the middle holes.”
Gustavus was led by first-year Max Savini (Anoka, Minn.) who shot a 74 (+2) to tie for fifth place in the individual standings. Andrew Krasaway (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) was next in line for the Gusties with a 76 (+4), while Alec Aunan (So., Rock Island, Minn.) and Chris Captain (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) followed with scores of 77 (+5) apiece, good for a 15th place tie. Senior Matt Spier (Prior Lake, Minn.) rounded out the Gustie scoring with a 79 (+7).
Augsburg’s first place team score was thanks in large part to the efforts of Dakota Krech and Brett Gaustad, who sit in first and second place, respectively, in the individual standings. Krech shot a three-under 69, while Gaustad was right behind him with a two-under 70.
“We’re looking forward to another opportunity to show our depth and quality of play tomorrow,” said Moe. “Today was a good day, but I know we have more left in the tank for another great round tomorrow.”
Round two will begin tomorrow at Bunker Hills, beginning at 11 a.m.
