Volleyball Hosts Bethany Lutheran Friday

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus volleyball team tonight hosts Bethany Lutheran College in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. The Gusties enter the match with a 10-2 overall record, while the Vikings are 3-10.

Gustavus captured its 10th consecutive victory Wednesday night at Gus Young Court, defeating St. Olaf in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-17. The Gustie defense limited the Oles to a pedestrian .058 attack percentage, while the home team’s attack rate was .189. Gustavus posted a .973 serve percentage with a season-high 10 service aces, which was a key point to the victory.

Alyssa Taylor (Sr., Trimont, Minn.) led the offense with 12 kills on 22 attempts with one error for a .500 attack percentage. Taylor also led the team with three blocks. Nora Holtan (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) distributed 27 assists and led the Gusties with five service aces. Brittany Luethmers (Fy., Prior Lake, Minn.) dug out 15 attacks, while Becca Woodstra (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) also contributed to the defensive effort with 10 digs.

After 45 sets played this season, Taylor leads the offense with 130 kills, a .354 attack percentage and averages 2.89 kills per set. Taylor also leads the team with 56 blocks. Her 1.24 blocks per set average is best in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Bethany Lutheran volleyball team Tuesday hit the road for a non-conference match against the Crown College Storm and came away with a four-set victory by scores of 25-21, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-18.

Alex Hansen (Fy., Austin, Minn.), Kristen Mielke (Jr., New Germany, Minn.) and Meagan Sons (So., Green Isle, Minn.) were the hot hands for the Vikings as both Hansen and Mielke recorded 16 kills for the Vikings offense, while Sons wasn’t far behind adding 15. Alexandra Grejlak (Fy., New Ulm, Minn.) had a hand in the Vikings offense coming away with 49 assists.

Defensively, Mackenna Hinz (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) led the Vikings with 24 digs, while teammates Anna Nelson (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) and Jessica Grimsley (So., Waconia, Minn.) added 11 and nine digs, respectively.

Overall, Bethany recorded 59 kills to Crown’s 34, giving them the offensive advantage to win the four-set match.

Mielke leads the Bethany offense with 141 kills in 44 sets for an average of 3.20 kills per set. Mielke also leads the Vikings with 21 blocks. Hanson is next in line with 109 kills and a 2.42 per set average. Grejlak handles to setting duties with 338 assists in 45 sets (7.51 per set). On the back line, Grimsley leads the way with 108 digs in 42 sets (2.57 per set).
