Michaela Schulz Earns Third MIAC Women’s Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week Award

BLOOMINGTON, MINN. – Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis sophomore Michaela Schulz (Elk River, Minn.) earned her third MIAC Women’s Tennis Athlete of-the-Week award on Tuesday after helping her team go 2-0 over the weekend to claim its 27th MIAC Championship and complete a perfect 10-0 record against conference opponents.

Gustavus’ match with St. Thomas on Saturday pitted two teams tied atop the conference standings and the Gusties handed the Tommies their lone MIAC loss of the season in 6-3 fashion. Schulz picked up two of the six points in convincing fashion, as she and doubles partner Lizzy Stanczyk (Jr., Plymouth, Wis.) earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles before picking up a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Shelby Henderson at the No. 1 singles position. On Sunday, the Elk River native dominated both of her matches again to help Gustavus claim the outright MIAC title in a 9-0 win over the College of Saint Benedict. Schulz and Stanczyk were claimed an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and Schulz dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Daley Rupar at No. 1 singles. With the four victories, Schulz wrapped up the regular season as Gustavus’ leader in both singles and doubles victories with a record of 20-10 in singles play a 22-6 doubles mark.

Thanks to the two wins, Gustavus completed the regular season atop of the MIAC standings for the first time since 2011. The Gusties will be the No. 1 seed in the 2015 MIAC Women’s Tennis Playoffs and have home-court advantage throughout. Gustavus received a first-round bye and will host a semifinal match on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against the lowest-seeded team to win in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
