Winona, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus softball team suffered a pair of losses to Saint Mary’s University on Monday afternoon at the Saint Mary’s Softball Field. The Gusties fell 4-1 in game one and 5-4 in game two. With the loss, Gustavus falls to 13-11 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC. Saint Mary’s improves to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC.

Saint Mary’s scored four unanswered runs before Gustavus could get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning.

After picking up a run in the third, the Cardinals scored two runs in the fourth thanks to a Borawski home run. They then added a run on three hits in the fifth to grab a 4-0 lead.

Gustavus’s run came in the sixth inning when Shelby Nosan (Sr., Baudette, Minn.) knocked out a one-run shot.

Hannah Heacox (So., Stillwater, Minn.) suffered her first loss in four starts after giving up four runs on nine hits. Betzold got the win after allowing one run on seven hits.

Game Two Recap

After Saint Mary’s grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning, Gustavus responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to go up 3-1. Kailey Morgan (Sr., Mound, Minn.) led off the inning with a home run, and Addy Nelsen (Jr., Willmar, Minn.) later singled to score Paige Breneman (Sr., Sherburn, Minn.). Breanne Rentschler (Sr., Lakefield, Minn.) capped the inning’s scoring with a one-run single that drove in Nelsen.

Saint Mary’s tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In the seventh, the Gusties grabbed a 4-3 lead when Nelsen plated Breneman on a sacrifice fly to left field. Not to be outdone, the Cardinals answered with two runs of their own. Opsahl tied the game with a leadoff home run, and Harper ripped the walk-off single to score Birkhauser.

Sarah Rozell (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) started the game and allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits through five innings. Jena Willis (So., Glacier, Mont.) took the loss (4-4) after giving up two runs on four hits in one and one-third innings.
