Swimming & Diving Wraps Up Friday Morning Prelims Posted on March 20th, 2015 by

Katie Olson will compete in the consolation finals of the 100 free later this evening.

Shenandoah, Texas – With the Friday morning session of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships complete, the Gustavus women will have one swimmer competing in tonight’s finals. Thanks to a 13th place performance in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke (1:04.08), Jennifer Strom (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) earned a spot in the consolation finals, which will held at the Conroe Natatorium later this evening.

“Jenny didn’t have her best race and yet she is still swimming at night. That speaks volumes for her talent and ability,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson. “I think we’ll see something special from her tonight and I’m looking forward to seeing how she bounces back.”

The 800-free relay featuring Leah Anderson (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.), Strom, Katie Olson (Sr., North Oaks, Minn.), and Michelle Campeau (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) capped off the morning with an eighth place finish after touching the wall in 7:37.60. Thanks to their effort in the race, the Gusties are guaranteed points after the conclusion of tonight’s finals.

“That’s the first time we’ve scored in the 800-free relay in many years, so I’m pleased the group was able to earn points,” Carlson said. “After being idle for two days, Leah Anderson started off her meet with a bang and provided the relay a great start. I’m excited to see what she can do in the 400-free relay tomorrow.”

The NCAA Championships will resume this evening with the finals session beginning at 6:00 p.m.

“Jenny has the potential to win the consolation heat and score important points,” concluded Carlson. “The team is in a good place both mentally and physically. If we take care of the little things, all else will fall into place.”
