BLOOMINGTON, MINN. – Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis sophomore Michaela Schulz (So., Elk River, Minn.) has been named the MIAC’s Women’s Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week, as voted on by the MIAC sports information directors. In two key MIAC matches this past Saturday, Schulz went a perfect 4-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles to help the Gusties defeat Hamline University 9-0 and St. Catherine University 7-2 to keep Gustavus perfect in conference play.
In the team’s first match of the day versus Hamline, Schulz did not drop a game in either of her singles or doubles matches. Schulz teamed with Lizzy Stanczyk (Jr., Plymouth, Wis.) to take an 8-0 win over Shamara Duwearatchi/Maggie Gibson at No. 2 doubles and followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against the Pipers’ Emily Butler at No. 1 singles.
Later that afternoon, Gustavus faced St. Catherine, a team the Gusties have lost to in each of the last two seasons, and Schulz proved to be just as dominant. She and Stanczyk took an 8-4 win over Wildcat tandem Maria Koval/Angie Lorenzen at No. 2 doubles, before Schulz earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Koval at No. 1 singles.
The Elk River native is currently in the midst of a six-match win-streak in singles and two-match win-streak in doubles. This spring, Schulz is 6-3 in singles play and 5-4 in doubles matches. She is the second Gustavus player to receive Athlete-of-the-Week honors this season, as teammate Laurel Krebsbach (Sr., North Oaks, Minn.) took home the distinction on March 3.
Schulz and company will be back in action this Saturday when the team hosts a pair of non-conference matches at the Swanson Tennis Center. Gustavus will host the College of St. Scholastica at 10:30 a.m. before welcoming Minnesota State University, Mankato at 6 p.m.
