BLOOMINGTON, MINN. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis team opened conference play with a bang last week, rolling to a pair of decisive MIAC wins over Bethel and Macalester on Saturday. Leading the way was senior Laurel Krebsbach (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View), who was a perfect 4-0 in her two doubles and two singles matches, and she only dropped a total of eight game in the four victories. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Krebsbach Tuesday with the MIAC Women’s Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week award.
Krebsbach’s big day began with a pair of wins to help her team roll to an 8-1 win over Bethel. She helped the Gusties’ top doubles tandem score an 8-3 win over the Royals, and she only dropped one game in her 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 1 singles. Later that day, Krebsbach was just as good in the 9-0 win over the Scots. She was a 6-2, 6-0, winner at No. 2 singles and again helped the No. 1 doubles team to an 8-2 victory. Krebsbach is now 2-3 this season in both singles and doubles play.
Thanks to Saturday’s dual victories, Gustavus inched closer to .500 overall (3-6) and got off to a perfect 2-0 start in conference play. The Gusties are one of four MIAC teams yet to suffer a loss in conference play in 2015. Krebsbach and company have another busy weekend ahead, as they’ll head to Sioux Falls, S.D., on Saturday for a matchup with Augustana at 6:30 p.m., and will then face Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday at noon. The team returns to conference play the following Saturday.
