Carolyn Draayer Named Winner Of Sheila Brown Award

BLOOMINGTON, MINN. – Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey senior Carolyn Draayer (Deephaven, Minn.) was named the 2014-15 Sheila Brown Award Winner on Thursday. The criteria used for selection include team leadership, sportsmanship, volunteer work, academic excellence, hockey skills and production on the ice. To be eligible for the honor, a player must be nominated by her coach with information focused on that criteria. A selection committee then chooses the recipient and St. Catherine University presents a plaque to the winner in honor of Brown, a former Wildcats’ athletic director.

This season, Draayer helped lead Gustavus to a an MIAC Championship after posting an overall record of 19-4-2 and and MIAC mark of 15-2-1 in the regular season.  Gustavus will now attempt to earn its 11th MIAC Playoff Crown in the past 12 years, a quest that will begin with Saturday’s semifinal matchup against Bethel. That game will take place at Don Robets Ice Rink beginning at 2 p.m.

The Sheila Brown Award is the latest MIAC honor for Draayer, who also received her second-straight All-Conference award on Thursday. This season she led the MIAC in game-winning goals (four) and power play goals (five), ranked third in goals (12), and seventh in points (20). In her career, Draayer has played in 110-of-112 career games, scored 81 points on 52 goals and 29 assists.  She ranks 21st in Gustavus women’s hockey history in goals and 21st in scoring.  The Deephaven product has also recorded 19 game-winning goals and 18 power play goals and over her career. During her tenure, Gustavus has won three MIAC Championships and also earned two trips the NCAA Division III Frozen Four.

In addition, Draayer is a two-time team captain, a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2014, and an NCAA Elite 89 in 2013, and an MIAC Elite 22 honoree in 2014. A communications studies major, she has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.971 and earned a spot on the Dean’s List every semester of her collegiate career.

Carolyn’s list of community service includes volunteer opportunities with the Gustavus Women in Leadership, Gustie Greeters and Special Olympics. She has also used her video production talents to create videos to promote Gustavus, the College’s athletics department, as well as a pair of promotional videos for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
