Grinnell, Iowa – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s swimming and diving team recorded 471 points to finish day one of the Grinnell College Invitational in third place on Friday at the Grinnell Natatorium in the Charles Benson Bear ’39 Recreation and Athletic Center. Leading the six-team field following the opening day is host Grinnell with 612 points followed by Augustana College with 480. The Gusties posted a total of seven top three finishes, which included a pair of individual event wins.
Seniors Zac Solis (Centennial, Colo.) and Kurt Youngdahl (Deephaven, Minn.) stood out for the Gusties with gold medal swims in their respective events. Solis won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:47.63, while Youngdahl took the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.89.
Also reaching the podium was Jeff Nelson (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) who finished runner-up to Youngdahl in the 100 free (48.73), and Jacob Stern (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) who came in third in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.45).
Kurt Youngdahl, Ross Larson (Sr., Brookings, S.D.), Adam Peters (So., Montevideo, Minn.) and Jeff Nelson teamed up to record Gustavus’s top relay finish of the day by taking second in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:28.47. The 400-medley relay team of Larson, Jacob Stern, Ben Miller (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa), and Youngdahl rounded out the day’s top swims with a third place finish in 3:39.17.
The 2015 Grinnell College Invitational will come to a conclusion on Saturday with preliminary races beginning at 9:00 a.m. Finals will begin later at 5:00 p.m.
