HONORING A LEGEND
Prior to Saturday’s game against St. Scholastica, the Gustavus Adolphus College will honor Division III hockey immortality with the dedication of the Don Roberts Sculpture.  Located at the entrance of Don Roberts Ice Rink, a bust of the legendary head men’s hockey coach at Gustavus was donated by a collection of his former players and friends of the program.  Roberts coached Gustavus to a 532-290-25 record in a career that spanned 33 seasons (1964-1997).  He retired as the winningest coach in the history of Division III men’s hockey in 1997 with 532 victories.  Recognized as one of the most prominent coaches in college hockey history, Roberts served as the chairman of the board and president of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA), as well as being a longtime member of the NCAA Rules and Hockey Advisory committees. Roberts received the John MacInnes Award from the AHCA for lifetime commitment to collegiate hockey in 1993 and the Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey Award in 2009.  He guided the Gusties to 13 MIAC Championships, was named MIAC Coach of the Year seven times (1973, 1975, 1976, 1984, 1990, 1991, and 1993) and in 1975 was honored as the National Coach of the Year by both the AHCA and the NAIA.

The evening’s festivities will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a donor dinner in the Jackson Campus Center.  The sculpture dedication will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Lund Arena entrance with h’ordeuvres and refreshments served inside the adjacent NCAA Championships Room.  The dedication ceremony is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
