Playoff Push Intensifies, Volleyball Heads To Bethel Wednesday Night Posted on October 29th, 2014 by

The Gustavus volleyball team will travel to Arden Hills where it will face Bethel tonight at 7:00 p.m.

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team will travel to Arden Hills for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Bethel University on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m.  With only two matches remaining in the 2014 regular season, Gustavus still looking to secure one of the three remaining spots in the 2014 MIAC Playoffs.  The Gusties enter Wednesday’s match sitting in a tie for fifth place in the league standings at 11-12 overall and 5-4 in the MIAC.  Bethel sits alone in fourth at 17-8 overall and 6-3 in the MIAC.

QUICK SIX
The Series…Wednesday’s match marks the 50th meeting between Gustavus and Bethel in volleyball.  Gustavus holds the upper hand in the all-time series with a record of 26-22-1.  The Royals cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Gusties via set scores of 25-19, 25-11, and 25-23 last season on Oct. 23 at Gus Young Court.

Ones To Watch…
Marissa Morgan (Fy., Rockford, Ill.) | First-year setter Marisa Morgan has looked more and more comfortable running Gustavus’s offense as the season has progressed.  Morgan has distributed 30 or more assists in the last three matches and is currently ranked third in the league in total assists with 865 (8.27 aps).  The rookie most recently turned in 39 dimes in the loss to Saint Ben’s last Saturday, her highest mark since a 57 assist night against St. Olaf on Oct. 8.

Tegan LaBerge (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) | Sophomore middle blocker Tegan LaBerge recently earned MIAC Volleyball Hitter-of-the-Week honors for her performances in wins over Hamline and Carleton last weekend.  LaBerge recorded 27 kills and 14 total blocks with a .373 hitting percentage, with at least 13 kills and six blocks in each victory.  She has reached double-digit kills in four straight matches, averaging 14.5 kills per match within that time-frame. 

Alyssa Taylor (Jr., Trimont, Minn.) | Despite Saturday’s loss to Saint Ben’s, junior middle hitter Alyssa Taylor continued her dominance at the net with 15 kills (her highest kill total in five matches) and a hitting percentage of .400.  Taylor has reached double-figure kills and has hit .400 or better in the team’s last four matches.  Within that time, she has totaled 48 kills for an average of 12 per match to go along with an efficient attack percentage of .500.  Taylor currently boasts the fourth-ranked attack rate in the MIAC at .337.

By The Numbers…
3 – The number of Gustavus players with 25 or more aces this season.  Alyssa Taylor leads the team with 27, while Marisa Morgan and Paige Breneman (Sr., Sherburn, Minn.) have recorded 25.  All three players rank inside the top 20 in the conference in aces. 1,822 – The number of career digs senior Paige Breneman has recorded during her Gustavus tenure.  Breneman’s dig total ranks second in Gustie volleyball history, sitting behind Emily Klein’s ’09 record total of 2,329 registered from 2005-to-2008.  The top three individuals on the career digs list, Klein, Breneman, and Jenny Ewert ’11, have all graduated within the last five years.
