Coon Rapids, Minn. – After finishing the first two days of the MIAC Championships in sixth place, the Gustavus Adolphus women’s golf team jumped ahead into the fourth place slot following the tournament’s final day to finish in fourth place. The Gusties shot a 320 (+32) on Monday, their best team score of the three-day tournament that was held at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
“The women really improved over the three days of the tournament,” said assistant coach Randy Stuckey. “I really liked their attitudes, their effort and their commitment to their shots and that commitment was evident in their move from sixth to fourth. I’m very proud of the way they handled themselves.”
Jordan Drenttel (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) shot a 76 (+4) in her last-ever round of the MIAC Championships. She finished with a final score of 242 and in a tie for ninth place overall, good for her second MIAC All-Conference honor in as many years.
“We have such great competition here in the MIAC and I feel honored to be in the top 10,” said Drenttel. “It was a tough weekend from a team standpoint, but I’m proud of the way our team battled. It was a fun day today and a great way to end our fall season.”
“Special congratulations to Jordy on a strong finish today and for receiving All-Conference honors,” said Stuckey. “She had a great fall season and has been a fantastic leader for us.”
Fellow senior Lauren Johnson (Plymouth, Minn.) finished one stroke behind Drenttel on the tournament by carding a 243 over the three days. Johnson registered an 82 (+10) on day three and finished in a tie for 12th place individually.
Mae Meierhenry (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored an 80 (+8) on day three to finish with a 247 and a 20th place individual finish.
First-year McKenzie Swanson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and senior Sam Falk (Glenwood, Minn) rounded out the Gustavus scoring for the tournament. Swanson improved each day of the tournament, bringing her score of 88 on day one to an 82 by day three, to finish with a score of 254 and in a tie for 27th place. Falk shot a 99 on day three and finished tied for 50th overall.
Carleton College was the overall team champion and also had the individual medalist in Grace Gilmore. The Knights finished the tournament with a 935, 21 shots better than second place University of St. Thomas, and Gilmore posted a 231, just ahead of teammate Shannon Holden and Bethel University’s Christine Piwnica who tied for second place with 232.
The MIAC Championships wrap up the team’s fall season and the team will resume meet play in March.
“The team is looking forward to our spring season,” said Drenttel. “It’s exciting that we get to prepare for it in the new facility.”
