Volleyball Back In Action, Travels To Hamline On Friday Posted on October 3rd, 2014 by

The Gustavus volleyball team will travel to St. Paul to face the Pipers on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

St. Peter, Minn. – After nearly a week-long break, the Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team is anxious to get back on the court as it heads back in to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a 7:00 p.m. match against Hamline University on Friday in St. Paul.

After suffering a 3-1 home loss to St. Thomas in its last time out on Saturday, Sept. 27, Gustavus heads into the weekend sitting in a three-way tie for fifth place in the league standings at 2-1 in the MIAC and 7-9 overall.  Hamline sits alongside Gustavus at 2-1 in the MIAC and 10-3 overall following a 3-0 victory over St. Olaf last Saturday in Northfield.

QUICK SIX
The Series…Friday’s match will be the 62nd meeting between Gustavus and Hamline in volleyball.  The Gusties lead the all-time series with a record of 50-9-2.  In last season’s regular season matchup on Sept. 25 at Gus Young Court, the visiting Pipers earned a 3-0 sweep via set scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 26-24.  Three Hamline players finished with double-figure kills including Stephanie Kaup (12), Sam Greeney-Hamlin (11), and Michelle Mattke (11).

Ones to watch…
Alyssa Taylor (Jr., Trimont, Minn.) | Despite facing one of the most daunting front rows in the league last Saturday against St. Thomas, middle hitter Alyssa Taylor managed to hit the floor with a team-best 13 kills and finish with an efficient attack percentage of .375…She has reached double-digit kills in four of the last five matches and heads into Friday with a team-high 166 on the season…Taylor’s .298 hitting percentage ranks sixth in the MIAC while her 2.63 kills per set average ranks 13th.
Jena Meyer (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) | Outside Jena Meyer became the first Hamline player to reach the 10o kill mark with a team-high 14 (.364) in last Saturday’s win over St. Olaf…Meyer boasts a total of 100 kills, a .240 attack percentage, and a 2.4 kills per set average…Meyer tallied a season-high 17 kills against UW-Stout on Sept. 19 and ranks 15th in the league in kills per set (2.56).

By the numbers…
5-7 – Gustavus’s record in September.  In their 12 September matches, the Gusties hit at a rate of .196 and averaged 16.73 digs per set.  Overall this season, Gustavus holds a team attack percentage of .188 with a 16.89 digs per set average.
6.20 – The digs per set average of Hamline defensive specialist Lynsey Reimer.  Despite ranking ninth in the league in total digs with 273, Reimer’s digs per set average ranks second.
363 – The number of points Gustavus has scored in the third set this season.  The Gusties have scored the most points yet also allowed the most points (360) in the third set.
