Men’s Golf Seeks Fresh Start At Saint John’s Invitational This Weekend

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team will travel to central Minnesota to compete in the Saint John’s Fall Invitational being held in Sauk Centre on Saturday, Sept. 13 and Sartell on Sunday, Sept. 14. Saturday’s round will take place at GreyStone Golf Club while the final round will be contested at Blackberry Ridge.

The Gustavus men’s golf team seeks a fresh start after placing eighth out of 18 teams at the Augsburg College Fall Invitational last weekend in its first tournament of the 2014 season. Thanks to a one-under par 71 on the tournament’s final day, Matt Spier (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) propelled himself into a 15th place standing with a 150 (+6) by the weekend’s end. Andrew Brandt (Jr., Medina, Minn.) and Chris Captain (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) finished next in line in 25th with 152s (+8).

The Gusties head into the Johnnies’ annual fall tournament looking to improve on last year’s ninth place finish where they posted a team score of 623 (+47) at the same two courses that will be played on this weekend. Of last season’s top five, only Andrew Brandt returns to the lineup with familiarity with the event. He placed 92nd overall a year ago with a 166 (+22).

Nebraska Wesleyan took last season’s team title with a 595 (+19), St. Cloud State finished second with a 599 (+23), and UW-Eau Claire rounded out the podium in third with a 602 (+26).

Scores following both rounds will be posted on Gustavus’s athletics website and http://www.gojohnnies.com/.  Saint John’s will also be providing live scoring throughout the weekend’s tournament.
