Winona, Minn. – After suffering a pair of losses to kick off the 2014 season, the Gustavus volleyball team bounced back with a pair of wins over the University of Dubuque and North Park University on the final day of the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic held over the weekend in Gostomski Fieldhouse on the campus of Saint Mary’s University. With a 3-1 win over Dubuque and a 3-0 victory over North Park, Gustavus finishes the opening weekend of the season with an overall record of 2-2.

The Gustavus volleyball team will continue tournament play next weekend when it travels to Minneapolis to take part in the Augsburg Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Gustavus vs. Dubuque Recap

Gustavus and Dubuque traded the opening two sets with the Spartans taking the first 25-20 and the Gusties knotting the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 win in the second. From there it was all Gustavus as the Gusties won the third 25-23 and the fourth 25-15.

Leading the Gustie offense was Alyssa Taylor (Jr., Trimont, Minn.) who knocked down 14 kills with a .333 attack percentage. Kelle Nett (Jr., Spring Valley, Ill.) finished behind Taylor with eight kills (.158).

Paige Breneman (Sr., Sherburn, Minn.) paced all defensive players with a match-high 26 digs, while Marisa Morgan (Fy., Rockford, Ill.) handled the setting duties and finished with 30 assists.

Gustavus vs. North Park Recap

The Gusties cruised to a three-set win in their final match of the weekend via set scores of 25-10, 25-11, and 25-17.

Gustavus posted 34 kills and hit at a rate of .207 as a team. Taylor Trautman (Fy., Hutchinson, Minn.) led the way with eight kills followed by Alyssa Taylor with six.

Marisa Morgan once again led the team with 17 assists and added five digs. Rachel Arnold (Jr., Kimball, Minn.) finished with 10 assists and registered six digs, while Paige Breneman also turned in six digs.
