Lakeville, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s tennis team hung on for a 5-4 win over St. Olaf College on Thursday night at the Lifetime Fitness Center in Lakeville, Minn.  The Gusties took two of the three doubles matches before splitting the six singles matches three apiece.  With the win, Gustavus improves to 14-5 overall and 7-2 in the MIAC, while St. Olaf drops to 6-4 overall and 5-4 in league play.

Gustavus got key wins at second and third doubles to open the match.  First-year tandem Michaela Schulz (Elk River, Minn.) and Lizzy Stanczyk (Plymouth, Wis.) breezed to an 8-2 win at No. 2 and St. Peter combo Calleigh Carlson (Fy., St. Peter, Minn.) and Sidney Dirks (So., St. Peter, Minn.) won 9-7 at No. 3 to give the Gusties a 2-1 advantage headed to singles.

Each team claimed three of the six singles matches to give Gustavus the 5-4 win.  The Gusties recorded wins by Schulz at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1), Laurel Krebsbach (Jr., North Oaks, Minn.) at No. 2 (6-4, 6-1), and Dirks at No. 4 (6-4, 4-6, 10-5) to secure the victory.

The Gusties will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the University of St. Thomas in the final regular season match of the year.  Tomorrow’s contest is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
