It was another big weekend for the Gustavus men’s tennis team with a pair of wins against regionally-ranked opponents, and another upperclassman stepping up to lead the way for the Gusties. Senior Joey MacGibbon (Apple Valley, Minn.) had an outstanding weekend, going a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles play to lead his team to nonconference wins DePauw and Kalamazoo. For his performance, MacGibbon was named the MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week.

MacGibbon started his big weekend with a pair of impressive victories in the Gusties’ 7-2 win Saturday over DePauw. He only dropped two games in his 6-2, 6-0, straight-sets win at No. 4 singles, and teamed up for an 8-4 win in the team’s No. 2 doubles spot. The following day, MacGibbon won a thrilling second set to finish off a 6-2, 7-5, win at No. 4 singles and added a near-perfect 8-1 No. 2 doubles win to help Gustavus beat Kalamazoo 8-1. This season, MacGibbon improved to 16-5 in singles play and he’s now 15-7 in doubles matches.

Thanks to the two victories, Gustavus improved to an impressive 24-5 overall in 2014, and it remains undefeated in conference play at 7-0 as the team tries to win its 26th-straight MIAC championship. MacGibbon and the Gusties will take a week off to rest up for the final stretch of the season, as the team has two huge matches looming. They will host on Carleton (5-0 MIAC) in a match with major MIAC title implications on April 26 at noon, and Gustavus will close out the regular season the following day with a 10 a.m. home match against St. Thomas (6-1 MIAC).
