Waverly, Iowa – Gustavus Adolphus senior track and field athlete Cameron Clause (Mankato, Minn.) stole the show at the Wartburg Select held this weekend at Walston-Hoover Stadium. Coming off an All-American performance in the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Clause rode the momentum to a gold medal, record-breaking showing in the decathlon against a slew of opponents representing the IIAC, WIAC, NSIC, CCIW, and MCC. The senior won the decathlon with a score 6,491, breaking Gustavus’s record, which stood for nearly 20 years.
Of the 10 events held Friday and Saturday, Clause won six, placed second in four, and fourth in another. He won the 100-meter dash in 11.29 (797 pts.), 400-meter dash in 52.26 (713 pts.), 1,500-meter dash in 4:42.16 (667 pts.), pole vault with a height of 14-feet 6.75-inches (743 pts.), and long jump with a leap of 21-feet 5.25-inches (704 pts.). Clause took second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.05 (727 pts.), high jump with a height of 6-feet (653 pts.), discus with a toss of 99-feet 6-inches (471 pts.), and javelin with a throw of 149-feet 3-inches (522 pts.). Cameron’s fourth came in the shot put (33’ 3.25”, 494 pts.).
With a score of 6,491 this weekend in Waverly, Cameron Clause broke Jason Meek’s school record of 6,094 set in 1994.
The Gustavus men’s team scored 39.50 points to finish eighth, while the women’s team score two points to take ninth.
Other top Gustavus performers included Blair Riegel (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), Ryan Obele (Sr., Le Sueur, Minn.), Alex Logan (So., Chaska, Minn.), Jeffrey Dubose (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.), and Mikaela Algren (Fy., Prior Lake, Minn.). Riegel finished third in the triple jump (43’ 10”), Obele took fourth in the discus (137’ 10”), Logan placed fifth in the discus (137’ 8”), Dubose came in fifth in the pole vault (14’ 7.25”), and Algren finished seventh in the 800-meter run (2:26.54).
The Gustavus track and field team will be back in action on Saturday, April 12 when it hosts the Lee Krough Invitational at the Gustie Outdoor Track & Field Complex.
