Winona, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s tennis team captured a pair of wins on Saturday at the Winona Tennis Center. The Gusties defeated Saint Mary’s University 9-0 to start the day before beating Winona State University 7-2 later in the afternoon. With the wins, Gustavus improves to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the MIAC.
In their 9-0 win over Saint Mary’s, the Gusties lost just 13 of 109 total games payed, controlling the match throughout. No player lost more than two games in a set in singles, while the Gusties lost just one game in the doubles competition. Laurel Krebsbach (Jr., North Oaks, Minn.) led the way, winning 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and pulling out an 8-1 win at first doubles.
Gustavus came back to defeat Division II Winona State in its second match of the day. The Warriors captured wins at third singles and second doubles, thanks in large part to the play of Aimee Basinski, but it would not be enough as the Gusties won in straight sets at four of the five remaining singles positions. They also emerged victorious with an 8-2 win at first singles and an 8-3 victory at third doubles.
The Gusties will be back in action next weekend when they travel across the country for a pair of matches in Texas. Gustavus will take on Texas Lutheran on Sunday, March 30th in Seguin before meeting Trinity University the following day in San Antonio.
