The Series: Today’s contest marks the 23rd meeting between Gustavus and Hamline in women’s soccer. The Gusties have dominated the series thus far with a record of 21-1-0. The only loss in the series for Gustavus came in 2011 when it fell to the Pipers by the final score of 4-1 in St. Paul. Last season when these two teams met, the result was a 2-1 win for the Gusties in St. Peter. Amanda Cartony scored the lone goal of the match just over seven minutes in to give Gustavus all it would need for the win.
Last Time Out: In its last match, Gustavus came away with a 2-1 win over Bethel on Senior Day in St. Peter. As the last home match of the season, it marked the final time that six seniors stepped onto the Gustie Soccer Field. One of those six seniors, Amanda Cartony, kicked things off with a goal in the 32nd minute to put the Gusties on top 1-0. First-year Maddison Ackiss followed with a goal in the 84th minute to seemingly seal the win for the Gusties with a 2-0 lead and less than six minutes remaining. However, the Royals had other ideas. Bethel came back to score less than four minutes later, but it was too little, too late for the Royals in the 2-1 loss.
Season Finales: Over the past 10 seasons, the Gusties have struggled in the final match of the season. Gustavus is a combined 2-7-1 over that span its season finales, with the two wins coming in back-to-back seasons in 2005 and 2006, both over Bethel. The Gustie women will look to reverse their fortune this afternoon after dropping their season finale to Macalester last season by the score of 3-0.
