Volleyball To Face Saint Mary’s On Saturday At Gus Young Court Posted on October 25th, 2013 by

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team will take on Saint Mary’s University in an Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference test on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. on Gus Young Court.  With just one spot remaining in the MIAC Playoffs, Gustavus is on the outside looking in in ninth place.  Saint Mary’s has the upper hand on the rest of the playoff contenders with one more win in fifth place.  The Gusties enter the weekend at 9-18 overall and 3-6 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals are 22-7 overall and 5-4 in the MIAC.

Last Time Out – The Gustavus volleyball team was last in action on Wednesday night, falling 3-0 to Bethel University on Gus Young Court.  The Gusties could not overcome an early deficit and suffered the sweep via set scores of 25-19, 25-11, and 25-23.

Gustavus posted a season-low attack percentage of .058 along with 27 kills.  The squad’s offense was led by Alyssa Taylor (Jr., Trimont, Minn.) and Becca Woodstra (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) who combined for 15 of the team’s 27 kills.  Taylor had eight with a .167 attack rate, while Woodstra had seven and hit .056.

Paige Breneman (Jr., Sherburn, Minn.) led Gustavus’s a defense with her highest dig total in three matches at 25, and Kendra Weege (Jr., Watertown, Minn.) handled the setting with 18 assists to go along with 11 digs.

The Series – Saturday’s match will be the 54th meeting between Gustavus and Saint Mary’s in volleyball.  Gustavus holds the advantage in the all-time series with a record of 35-19.  In last season’s meeting between the two teams in Winona, the Cardinals earned a 3-0 win through set scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-19.

Scouting The Cardinals – The Saint Mary’s volleyball team enters Saturday afternoon’s contest coming off a 3-0 win over St. Olaf on Wednesday night in Northfield.  The Cardinals posted an efficient team hitting percentage of .248 and earned the win with 25-20, 25-12, and 25-22 set scores.

Saint Mary’s currently boasts the fourth-ranked offense in the MIAC with a 13.20 kills per set average.  The Cardinals have tallied a league-high 1,373 kills and are hitting at a rate of .204.  They are 10-2 in the month of October and have hit above .200 nine times within that time.

Leading the Saint Mary’s offense is Alex Peterson who has hit the floor with a total of 359 kills (2nd/MIAC) for an average of 3.55 kills per set (5th/MIAC).  Within MIAC play, Peterson has 117 kills (5th/MIAC) and is hitting at a 19.5-percent clip (29th/MIAC).

Setting up the offense throughout the 2013 campaign has been Lexi Assimos who has distributed an MIAC-best 1,066 assists.  Within conference play, she ranks fourth in the league in both assists (347) and assists per set (10.52).

Standing out in the back row is Lex Krogstad.  Krogstad has turned in 503 digs (2nd/MIAC) and averages 4.88 digs per set (5th/MIAC).  Against MIAC foes, Krogstad ranks eighth in both digs (147) and digs per set (4.45).  Behind Krogstad sits a three of players with similar dig totals.  Morgan Thomas ranks second on the team with 258 digs, Jordan Wolfe is next with 256, and Assimos rounds out the group with 255.  Assimos has registered ten double-doubles in assists and digs this season.
