Men’s Soccer Ready To Take On Augsburg On Saturday

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s soccer team will face Augsburg College in an MIAC showdown on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on the Gustie Soccer Field.  With a win last Saturday over Macalester, Gustavus secured a place in the MIAC Playoffs and is now atop the league standings with 21 points.  Augsburg is coming a 1-0 loss to Saint John’s in its last outing but is still in the hunt for a playoff spot in a tie for fifth place with 12 points.  Gustavus enters the weekend at 10-2-1 overall and 7-0-0 in the MIAC, while Augsburg heads in at 9-5-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the MIAC.

“Augsburg is fighting for the fourth place in the conference standings, which would allow them to qualify for postseason play,” said head coach Mike Middleton about’s Saturday’s opponent.  “This is a must-win game for them, so I’m certain they will be at their most competitive.  They are a side that is known to try to make the game difficult physically for their opponents, and I am sure that they will try to make this into a rugged contest once again.”

“They play their system well, are defensively quite organized, and will try to pressure all over the field in order to force mistakes,” continued Middleton.  “When they win the ball they will try to get up the field quickly with as few passes as possible.  It’s certainly a high-tempo style and a very physically demanding one.  It should be a fun contest and we’re looking forward to the challenge!”
