Falk, Women’s Golf Win College City Classic

Hastings, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s golf team concluded its weekend at Bellwood Oaks Golf Club with a first place finish at the College City Classic on Sunday afternoon.  Sam Falk (Jr., Glenwood, Minn.) also brought home an individual first place finish for her first tournament title of the season.

After ranking third after Saturday’s opening round with a team score of 326 (+34), the Gusties came back to shoot the lowest round of the day in Sunday’s final round with a team total of 319 (+27) for a weekend total of 645 (+61).  Gustavus tied for first with St. Thomas, but held the tie breaker, to record the win.

Sam Falk led the Gusties with an individual crown of her own.  The junior had a one-shot lead after the first round on Saturday after turning in a four-over-par 77.  Falk followed her performance yesterday with an even better round on Sunday, carding a two-over 75 to extend her lead to seven strokes on the final leaderboard.  She finished with a weekend total of 152 strokes (+9).

Lauren Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) also took her place in the top five, finishing in a tie for fifth.  After carding an opening round 84 (+11) on Saturday, Johnson came back to shoot the second-lowest score of the day on Sunday with a 78 (+5) for a weekend total of 162 (+16).  Representing the Gustavus JV team, Mae Meierhenry (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) also tied for fifth with a 16-over-par 162 on the weekend.  Meierhenry used consistency as her strength over the weekend, shooting an identical pair of eight-over-par 81s.

“It was a better day for the gals today,” mentioned Head Coach Scott Moe of his team’s performance on Sunday.  “We are getting better, which is encouraging to see.  It was also nice to see Sam win a tournament.  She played really well all weekend, so I was happy to see her come out on top.”

The Gusties will be back in action next weekend when they host the Gustie Fall Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28th and Sunday, Sept. 29th.  Saturday’s opening round will take place at Le Sueur Country Club in Le Sueur, Minn.  Sunday’s second round will be held at North Links in Mankato, Minn.
