St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team will travel to central Minnesota to compete in the Saint John’s Fall Invitational this weekend. The opening round of the tournament will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14 with the at the Greystone Golf Club in Sauke Centre. The meet will then conclude on Saturday at Blackberry Ridge Ridge Golf Course in Sartell.
After two duals to open the 2013 fall season, Gustavus took part in its first tournament last weekend by competing in the Augsburg Invitational held at the Majestic Oaks Golf Club in Ham Lake. With a team score of 616 (+40) over the two-day meet, the Gusties turned in a runner-up finish behind the University of Manitoba.
Matt Jensen (Sr., Edina, Minn.) led the team at the Augsburg Invite with an 11th place finish after shooting a 77-75-152 (+8). After three total rounds, Jensen sits second on the squad in stroke average with a 74.7 (+4).
Tyler McMorrow (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) finished behind Jensen at Ham Lake with a 78-76-154 (+10) to come in 15th. Andrew Brandt (So., Medina, Minn.) and Lee Bystrom (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) also cracked the top 20, placing in a tie for 19th with 155s (+11). Brandt went 77-78, while Bystrom shot 81-74.
McMorrow heads into the weekend as the team’s leader in stroke average at 73.5 (+2). Bystrom is third and holds a 76.3 (+5) average, and Sam Peterson (So., Benson, Minn.) sits fourth with a 76.8 (+5). Andrew Oakes (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) rounds out Gustavus’s top five in fifth with an average of 77.8 (+6).
The Gusties ended up in third for the second consecutive year at last year’s Saint John’s Invite held at the same courses. Gustavus shot a tournament-low 298 to open play on day one before registering a 301 on day two, finishing with a weekend total 599 (+23). Oakes was the team leader with a third place finish after going 72-73 for a one-over-par 145 last season.
