Men’s Golf Finishes Runner Up At Augsburg Invitational

Ham Lake, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team turned in the second lowest round of Sunday with a 303 to finish in second place overall with a two-day team score of 616 (+40).  The Gusties moved up two spots from a fourth place standing after shooting a 313 on Saturday.

The University of Manitoba continued its success from day one with tournament low 289 on Sunday, finishing with a first place team score of 581 (+5).  Saint John’s University rounded out the top three in third with a 618 (+42).

Leading Gustavus’s first team was Matt Jensen (Sr. Edina, Minn.).  Jensen, who sat in 15th place after his opening round 77 (+5), shot a three-over-par 75 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 11th place overall with 152 (+8) on the weekend.  Tyler McMorrow (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) shot a four-over 76 today to finish in a tie for 15th with a two-day 154 (+10).  McMorrow also shot a 77 (+5) on Saturday.

Rounding out Gustavus’s top five scoring individuals was Andrew Brandt (So., Medina, Minn.), Lee Bystrom (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.), and Andrew Oakes (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.).  Brandt and Bystrom both finished 19th after carding a 155 (+11) total.  Brandt shot a 77-78 over the weekend and Bystrom went 81-74.  Oakes placed 46th with an 82-81-157 (+13).  Andrew Krasaway (So., Hermantown, Minn.) did not factor into the team score but finished 25th with a 79-78-157 (+13).

Gustavus’s second team recorded a 10th place finish with a team score of 646 (+70) after tallying a 319 on day one and a 327 on day two.

Sam Peterson (So., Benson, Minn.) led the group with a two-day 152 (+8) to finish alongside Matt Jensen in 11th place.  Peterson fired a 75 (+3) on Saturday then followed with a 77 (+5) on Sunday.

Sharing individual medalist honors at the tournament was Manitoba’s Charlie Boyechko and Josh Wytinck who carded a winning total of 144 (E).  Brandon Jones of Augsburg College filled the third place position on the podium with a 146 (+2).

The Gustavus men’s golf team will be back on the links next weekend when it heads to central Minnesota for Saint John’s Fall Invitational.  The first round will be held at the Greystone Golf Club in Sauk Centre on Saturday, Sept. 14 and the second round will take place at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell on Sunday, Sept. 15.
