St. Paul – Thanks to the steady play of sophomore Sam Falk (Glenwood, Minn.), the Gustavus women’s golf team earned a top five standing this past weekend at the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling held at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill.. Falk, who shot a two-day 156 (+12), led the Gusties to a fifth place finish with a team score of 665 (+88). For her efforts, Falk received the honor of MIAC Women’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week, taking home the distinction for the second time this season.
“”Sam had a great two day tournament – very nice to see her put it together for both days,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “Conditions were very tough, especially considering we have not been able to spend any time outside. There were a number of players that will be selected as All-Americans in the field so it was nice for her to post the numbers she did.”
In the Gustavus women’s golf team’s second tournament of the spring, Falk’s consistency paid off with a fifth place finish – her second top five mark of the 2012-13 campaign. Finishing alongside Andrea Hibbert of Washington University (Mo.), the sophomore kicked off the weekend with a five-over-par 77 to sit in a tie for third place after day one. She then fired a seven-over 79 to round out the weekend +12 with a 156. Her score at the IWU Spring Fling matched her season-best 156 (+11) turned in at the season-opening Georgianni Memorial Invite held Sept. 1-2. Falk currently carries the second-lowest average on the team with an 81.5.
