Men’s Tennis Defeats Cal Tech 8-1, Falls To Redlands 6-3 Posted on April 4th, 2013 by

The Gustavus men’s tennis team was once again busy on its tour of southern California Wednesday afternoon.  The Gusties took part in two matches with one group heading to Pasadena to face the California Institute of Technology and another squad trekking to Redlands to take on the University of Redlands.  Gustavus cruised to an 8-1 victory over Cal Tech, yet fell to Redlands 6-3, bringing its season record to 14-7 overall.

In the victory over Cal Tech, the Black and Gold swept the doubles competition before taking 5-of-6 points from singles.  David Brown (Fr., Oakland, Calif.) and Mitchell Elofson (Fr., St. Peter, Minn.) edged Luka Mernik and Devashish Joshi 9-7 at No. 1 doubles, Sam Hjelm (So., North Oaks, Minn.) and Ben Halvorson (So., Englewood, Colo.) topped Amol Kamat and Ishan Mehta 8-3 at No. 2, and Matt Baker (So., Rosemount, Minn.) and Colin Rieke (So., Rochester, Minn.) defeated Alex Henny and Rushikesh Joshi 8-5 at No. 3.

In singles, Bryan Miles (Jr., Wausau, Wis.) defeated Devashish Joshi 7-6 (4), 6-2 at No. 1, Brown topped Mernik 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, Logan Peterson (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) cruised past Henny 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Baker swept Kamat 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Michael Lieberman (Sr. Long Grove, Ill.) beat JD Co-Reyes 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.

Against the University of Redlands 60 miles away at the Verdieck Courts, the Bulldogs took two points from the Gusties in doubles after wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.  Tyler Johnson (Sr., West Bend, Wis.) and Grant Leisner (Jr., Andover, Minn.) picked up the lone doubles win by edging Nick Cummins and Connor Hyde 9-8 (7) at No. 2.

Gustavus gathered points in singles play after wins from its top two spots.  Amrik Donkena (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) defeated Patrick Lipscomb 6-4, 6-4, and Mya Smith-Dennis (Jr., Savage, Minn.) was victorious over Cummins 6-3, 6-4.

The Gustavus men’s tennis team will take a day off from matches before concluding its trip with a pair of contests against Cerritos College and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Friday afternoon.  The Gusties will face Cerritos in Norwalk and Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont at 2:00 p.m.
