Both Men’s And Women’s Swimming & Diving Place Second At Grinnell Invite

Grinnell, Iowa – The day one standings of the Grinnell College Invitational held on the second day of competition, as host Grinnell won the men’s title and the University of Nebraska, Omaha won the women’s title.  For the second year in a row, Grinnell edged the Gustavus men, totaling 1253.5 points to the Black and Gold’s 1009.5.  The Gustavus women, who won the meet last season, tallied 1000 points for a second place standing behind UNO who registered 1058.  Augustana College rounded out the podium in third (909 pts.) on the men’s side, while Luther College placed third (759 pts.) on the women’s side.

The Gustie women posted six top-three finishes on the day.  In the relay events, Alissa Tinklenberg (Jr., Willmar, Minn.), Jennifer Strom (So., Rochester, Minn.), Laura Drake (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.), and Katie Olson (So., North Oaks, Minn.) teamed up to place second in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:50.31.  In the 400-freestyle relay, Leah Anderson (Fy., Apple Valley, Minn.), Tarin Anding (Fy., Sartell, Minn.), Olson, and Tinklenberg swam a 3:38.63 to finish runner-up as well.

Top individual swimmers on the women’s team included Alissa Tinklenberg, Jennifer Strom, and Katie Olson.  Tinklenberg won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.13 and added a third place finish in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:44.13.  Strom touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.99, and Olson took top marks in the 50 free with a time of 24.97.

Zach Solis (So., Centennial, Colo.), Ross Larson (So., Brookings, S.D.), and Jacob Stern (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.) all recorded individual finishes on the podium for the Gustie men’s squad.  Solis out-swam the field in the 200 free with a first place finish in 1:46.75.  He also placed runner-up in the 200 back after going 1:58.80.  Larson’s top swim came by way of a third place finish in the 100 butterfly (54.48), and Stern’s top mark came in a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.80).

The men’s 200-medley relay team consisting of Dante Colucci (Fy., Summit, N.J.), Stern, Sam Olson-Anstett (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.), and Jeff Nelson (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) came in fifth (1:41.04), while the 400-free relay team of Solis, Kento Gurung (So., Eagan, Minn.), Colucci, and Nelson also placed fifth (3:18.34).

The Gustavus men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool on Jan. 26 when they host University of St. Thomas in a dual set to begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Lund Center Natatorium.
