Men’s Tennis Has Strong Showing On Opening Day Of USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Posted on September 29th, 2012 by

St. Peter, Minn. – After the opening day of play at the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional being held on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College, three Gustavus doubles teams and five Gustavus singles players are still alive and will compete in day two.

In doubles, the top seeded duo of Amrik Donkena and Mya Smith-Dennis cruised to the third round via 8-4 and 8-2 victories over Macalester and St. Thomas, respectively.  Joey MacGibbon and Bradley Entwistle picked up back-to-back 8-0 wins to advance, while Tyler Johnson and Grant Leisner are still alive with 8-2 and 9-7 wins.

The top two singles players in the tournament, Gustavus’ Donkena and Smith-Dennis, both moved on to the fourth round with straight-set wins.  Also moving on to the tournament’s second day was Tyler Johnson, Juan Luis Chu, and Motasam Al-Houni.

The fourth round of the singles tournament will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, while the doubles tournament will resume at 3:00 p.m. later in the day.
