Volleyball Heads To Augsburg Tournament This Weekend Posted on September 6th, 2012 by

The Gustavus volleyball team will travel to Minneapolis to take part in the Augsburg Volleyball Invitational held on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8, in Si Melby Hall.

The Gusties will kick off the tournament with a match against Coe College on Friday at 2:00 p.m.  They will then cap the evening with a showdown against UW-Eau Claire at 6:00 p.m.

Gustavus will be up bright and early on Saturday when it faces UW-Stevens Point at 9:00 a.m.  The Black and Gold will the bring their tournament to a close with a match against Northwestern College at 11:00 a.m.

Gustavus enters the weekend with a 3-1 overall record after opening the season at the UW-Whitewater Tournament last weekend.  Gustavus defeated Central 3-2, UW-Oshkosh 3-1, and Wheaton 3-2, yet suffered a 3-0 loss to UW-Whitewater.

Emily Phillips (Sr., Cleveland, Minn.) and Becca Woodstra (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) were the offensive leaders in Whitewater, finishing with double-figure kills in all but one match.  Phillips recorded 51 kills (3.00 k/set) and hit at a .243 percentage, while Woodstra tallied 46 kills (2.71k/set) with a .225 hitting percentage.  As a team, Gustavus averaged 10.29 kills per set and hit at a .143 percentage on the weekend.

Sophomore Kendra Weege (Watertown, Minn.) took over as the primary setter in her first weekend in a Gustavus uniform.  She dished out 106 set assists for an average of 6.24 per set.

On defense, sophomore Paige Breneman (Sherburn, Minn.) registered 73 digs fro an average of 4.29 per set.  Woodstra and Weege also had a solid weekend on the defensive, recording 34 and 33 digs, respectively.  It was Emily Gilman (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Kelle Nett (Fy., Spring Valley, Ill.) showing some force at the net, combining for 25 blocks over the two day span.

Last season the Gusties went 2-2 at the Augsburg Tournament for a fifth place finish.  Former setter Malea Noenning `11 was selected to the All-Tournament team after finishing the weekend with 21 digs and 117 set assists.

Teams competing on Friday and Saturday in Minneapolis include Augbsurg, Coe College, Northwestern College, the College of Saint Benedict, St. Scholastica College, UW-Stevens Point, and UW-Eau Claire.
