The Gustavus men’s track and field team hosted its second meet of the season Saturday at the Gustavus track complex for the 12th Annual Drake Alternative. Participating schools included Augsburg College, Bemidji State University, Bethany Lutheran College, Carleton College, Hamline University, Martin Luther College, the University of Minnesota, UM-Duluth, Minnesota State University-Mankato, UM-Morris, North Dakota State University, Northwestern College, St. Cloud State University, Saint John’s University, St. Olaf College, St. Thomas and the University of Sioux Falls. Team scores were not kept.
Steve Groskreutz, who won the 400-meter hurdles and placed second in the 110-meter hurdles, highlighted the Gusties on the track. The senior Faribault, Minn. native crossed the line second in the 110 with a time of 15.48 and topped the field in the 400 at 53.98.
Other standouts on the track for Gustavus were Eric Jorgenson, Kevin Chan and Anders Bowman. Jorgenson placed second in the 800-meter at 1:57.16, while Chan was right on his heels in third with a time of 1:57.52. Bowman garnered bronze in the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 9:36.44.
Gustavus alumni Mark Hartman took second in the one-mile alumni race with a time of 5:05.87.
In the field for the Black and Gold, it was Ryan Ness gaining top honors in the javelin with a throw of 47.39 meters. Taking bronze in other field events were Cameron Clause and Mark Stice. Clause took third in the long jump with a distance of 6.22 meters and Stice placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 48.31 meters.
Next weekend, the Gusties will travel to Northfield, Minn. to participate in the MIAC Multi’s on May 3-4.
