Amanda Cartony – February Female Student-Athlete of the Month – Sophomore, Hockey
The Gustavus women’s hockey team has posted one of its best seasons in program history to date with a 22-2-2 (.885) overall record heading into the MIAC Championship Game. The Gustie women are headed to their 13th consecutive conference title game after finishing the month of February with a 7-1-0 record. Head Coach Mike Carroll’s squad has a ton of talent, including an up-and-coming star on the team who’s helped the Gusties reach where they’re at right now. Sophomore forward Amanda Cartony led the Three Crowns with 11 points on eight goals and three assists during the month and for her outstanding play, the Office of Sports Information has named Cartony Female Student-Athlete of the Month for February, presented by Thrivent Financial.
The Gusties started the month with a clean sweep over Hamline University 3-2, 2-1 on Feb. 3-4. Cartony provided an assist in game one and followed with a goal in game two for a two-point weekend. The Stillwater, Minn. native followed that performance with an even stronger showing against Saint Mary’s University the ensuing weekend. Cartony tallied two goals and an assist in an 8-2 victory over the Cardinals in game one of the series and added another goal in a 5-0 shutout in game two for a four-point weekend.
After splitting a series with St. Olaf 5-0, 2-5 on Feb. 17-18 where no points were scored by Cartony, the Stillwater product rebounded with her best performance of the season against Saint Benedict in the regular season series finale. In a 9-1 thumping of the Blazers in game one, Cartony scored two power play goals. The Gusties earned the sweep with a 7-2 victory the next day and Cartony added two goals and an assist for a five-point weekend. She was honored as MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Cartony is tied for second on the team with 13 goals (9th/MIAC) this season and is tied for fifth with 13 assists. Her 26 points ranks third on the team and her 1.08 points per game is ninth in the MIAC. She also has two short-handed points this season, which ranks fourth in the conference. The sophomore forward has tied her career-high in goals with 13 and has set career marks in assists (13) and points (26). She currently has 26 goals and 21 assists for 47 career points.
“Cartony is a huge asset to our team right now,” teammate Melissa Doyle said. “She’s a smart, selfless player on the ice who helps her line dominate in any situation of the game. She brings energy both on and off the ice as well as words of encouragement to motivate others to do their best.”
On Thursday, the MIAC announced its Women’s Hockey All-Conference awards and Cartony received All-Conference honors for the second-straight season.
The Gustie women are seeking their ninth consecutive MIAC Playoff Championship this Saturday against second-seeded Concordia College. The puck is set to drop at 2:00 p.m. at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
