Men’s Tennis Takes Seventh Place At ITA National Indoor Championship Posted on February 26th, 2012 by

After dropping its first two matches of the weekend, the Gustavus men’s tennis team defeated 11th-ranked University of Chicago 7-2 Saturday in St. Peter, Minn. for a seventh place finish at the 2012 ITA National Indoor Championship. The Gusties improve to 6-4 overall, while the Maroons drop to 4-4.

The Gusties claimed four victories in singles play and swept doubles competition.

Emory University, who defeated Gustavus 6-3 in the quarterfinals, won the ITA National Indoor Championship with a 7-2 victory over UC-Santa Cruz. Kenyon College took third place after defeating Washington University 5-4 and Trinity University took fifth with a 6-3 win over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

5. Tyler Johnson (GAC) def. Zsolt Szabo (UC) 4-6, 6-4, 10-4

6. Joey MacGibbon (GAC) def. Deepak Sabada (UC) 3-0, retired

Doubles Competition

1. Amrik Donkena/Mya Smith-Dennis (GAC) def. Troy Brinker/Jan Stefanski (UC) 8-4

2. Patrick Clark/Tyler Johnson (GAC) def. Ankur Bhargava/Deepak Sabada (UC) 8-6

3. Juan Luis Chu/Daniel Pomeranc (GAC) def. Zsolt Szabo/Harrison Abrams (UC) 9-8 (7-5)
