Women’s Basketball Falls 69-60 To St. Thomas

The Gustavus women’s basketball team fell 69-60 to St. Thomas Saturday night in St. Paul, dropping to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC, while the Tommies improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

The Gustavus women’s basketball team fell 69-60 to St. Thomas Saturday night in St. Paul, dropping to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC, while the Tommies improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

Kelsey Florian led the Gusties for the second-straight game with 14 points off the bench. She was one of three Gusties to record double-digit points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Florian also registered four rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes of action. Molly Geske had 12 points and Colleen Ruane posted 10.

The Tommies shot 50.0-percent (13-26) from the field in the first half and never looked back. St. Thomas led 35-25 at halftime and traded blows with the Gusties throughout the second, but managed to hold on for the nine-point victory.

Gustavus converted 9-of-20 shots (45.0-percent) in the first and generated more scoring opportunities in the second, but was unable to transfer those chances into quality production. The Gusties almost doubled their shot total from the first to the second (20-to-35), but only made 34.3-percent of those attempts. The Black and Gold shot 38.2-percent for the game, while the Toms converted 46.7-percent of their shots.

St. Thomas’ Taylor Young led all scorers with 21 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, including one three-pointer, 8-of-9 from the charity stripe, two assists and two steals.

The Gusties continue MIAC action on the road Monday night in Northfield, Minn. against Carleton. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
