The home team had won the last five head-to-head meetings between Gustavus and St. Olaf – Saturday’s dual held in the Lund Natatorium was no different. The Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team swam to a 161-139 victory over St. Olaf, recording eight event wins along the way.
Individually, the Gusties tallied four wins. Alissa Tinklenberg led the way with two victories and a second place finish. Tinklenberg won both the 200 backstroke and 500 free, touching the wall in 2:10.57 in the 200 back and 3:15.89 in the 500 free. Her second place finish came in the 200 free, turning in a time of 1:57.05.
Jennifer Strom also recorded three finishes inside the top two. Strom took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.19, while adding two second place marks in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.45) and 200 IM (2:16.61).
Adding Gustavus’ other individual race win was Kelsey Lucia. Lucia went 24.68 to win the 50 free, while also taking third in the 100 free with a time of 55.95.
Katie Olson and Steph Korba each notched multiple top-three marks at the meet. Olson had two second and one third place finish. She turned in a time of 25.46 (2nd) in the 50 free and 55.95 in the 100 free (2nd) while taking third in the 200 free (1:59.92). Steph Korba placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.26 and third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:20.23.
Melissa Aune, Laura Drake, and Allyson Hannemann rounded out the top individual performers. All three finished third in their respective races; Aune in the 1,000 free (11:17.50), Drake in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.05), and Hannemann in the 100 backstroke (1:03.65).
The Gusties recorded wins in both relay events of meet. The 200-medley relay of Hannemann, Laura Drake, Korba, and Lucia touched the wall in 1:50.56. The first place 200-free relay team consisting of Lucia, Olson, Sarah Hund, Tinklenberg won the race by over five seconds with a time of 1:38.01. The 200-free relay team set a new pool record with with the win. The previous pool record was 1:39.08 set in 2007 by UW-Stevens Point.
The Gustie women divers swept the podium in both the one and three-meter diving. Heather Funai won both diving events, scoring a 213.35 on the one-meter and 193.00 on the three-meter. Laura Dobler placed second on the three-meter (162.60) and third on the one-meter (159.75). Alicia Alvarado notched a second place mark in the one-meter (184.00), while Eydie Kramer dove third in the three-meter (143.65).
The Gustavus swimming and diving teams will cap off their three-meet home-stand next Saturday, Nov. 19, when it hosts Saint John’s, Saint Ben’s and MSU-Mankato.
