Gustavus Adolphus senior captain Taylor Drenttel has been named MIAC Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week after leading the Gustavus women’s golf team to a first place finish at the Division 3 Classic held over the weekend in Lake City, Minn.

The Inver Grove Heights, Minn. native turned in her best performance of the season, shooting a 73-80-153 (+9) to win the Division 3 Classic by two strokes over UW-Eau Claire’s Sara Mattes.  Her one-over-par first round score of 73 was the top round of the tournament, and is currently the lowest round shot in the MIAC this season.

Drenttel, who got out to a slow start this season after a 13th place finish at the Georgianni and a 43rd place finish at the O’Brien, bested her top score of the year by 11 strokes.  She is now averaging an 81.8 (+10), which ranks third on the team.

The tournament victory is Drenttel’s first since April 25, 2010 when she took the Carleton Invitational with a 76-77-153 (+9).

Taylor and the rest of the Gustavus women’s golf team will participate in its final regular season meet before the MIAC Championships this weekend Sept. 24-25 at the Southwest Minnesota State Invite in Marshall, Minn.

Drenttel averages an 80.5 in her previous six rounds at the Mustang Invite.  Her top finish at the tournament came in 2009 when she placed seventh with a 79-80-159 (+15).
