Women’s Golf Wins Division 3 Classic, Taylor Drenttel Places First

Taylor Drenttel recorded her first win of the season at the Division 3 Classic, shooting a 153 (+9).

The Gustavus women’s golf team held true on day two, winning the Division 3 Classic that featured 21 of the region’s top NCAA Division III teams in the region.  The Gusties, who were tied with UW-Eau Claire at 321 after day one, shot a 314 on day two, finishing the tournament with a two-day total 635 (+59). The Division 3 Classic was held on Saturday and Sunday at the Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn.

Senior Taylor Drenttel (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) turned in her best performance of the season, shooting a 73-80-153 (+9) to win the tournament.  Drenttel’s season-low 73 on day one turned out to be her saving grace as she edged UW-Eau Claire’s Sara Mattes and Emily Swift by two strokes.  Mattes and Swift both finished with an 11-over-par 155.  The tournament win was Drenttel’s first since April 25, 2010 when the then sophomore took the Carleton Invitational.

Gustavus edged the Blugolds by four strokes in day two.  UW-Eau Claire finished with a 639 (+63), while UW-Stout finished in third place with a two-day total 650 (+74).

Also finishing in the top-10 for the Gusties was Sam Falk (Glenwood, Minn.).  Falk, coming off her best tournament of the season at the O’Brien last weekend, shot an 82-79-161 (+17) to finish in a four-way tie for ninth place.

The Gusties will be back on the course next weekend Sept. 24-25 at the Southwest Minnesota State Invite held in Marshall, Minn.
