Women’s Tennis Players Sam Frank And Megan Gaard Selected To Compete At NCAA Championships

The NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Committee has selected Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis players Sam Frank (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Megan Gaard (Edina, Minn.) to compete in the 2011 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships held May 27-29 in Claremont, Calif.  Sam Frank will compete in the singles championship, while she and Megan Gaard will team up to battle in the doubles championship.  The tournaments consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams.

Sam Frank enters the NCAA Championships with an overall individual record of 23-9.  The senior Mahtomedi, Minn. native is the sixth-ranked singles player in the Central Region according to the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.  Frank, a three-time All-MIAC performer in singles, won the 2010 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional before finishing second at the ITA Small College Championships this past fall.

The Frank/Megan Gaard duo comes into the NCAA Championships with a record of 18-6 on the season.  The pair suffered its first loss since April 9 last weekend to Kendra Higgins and Chrissy Hu of Chicago University in the NCAA Regional Championship.  Frank and Gaard earned All-Conference honors in doubles, going undefeated (8-0) in the MIAC and winning 11 of their last 12 matches.   The duo is rated third in the Central Region, as Frank is 26-8 overall in doubles and Gaard is 27-10.

The draw for the individual championships will be done by the men’s and women’s tennis committees and will be released on the last day of the team championships.
