Women’s Track & Field Competes At Hamline Capitol City Championships

The Gustavus women’s track team took part in the Capitol City Championships hosted by Hamline University on Thursday in St. Paul. There no team scores kept at the meet, as Sam Broderius, Janey Helland, and Sarah Baker all tallied wins for Gustavus.

The Gustavus women’s track team took part in the Capitol City Championships hosted by Hamline University on Thursday in St. Paul.  The Gusties recorded five event wins and 21 individual event top-10 finishes on the day.  There no team scores kept at the meet.  Sam Broderius, Janey Helland, and Sarah Baker all tallied wins for Gustavus.

Sam Broderius led the way with two first place finishes and a fourth place mark in the throws.  Broderius won the shot put with a throw of 41’ 1.75” and the discus with a throw of 143’ 10”, a season best for her.  Her fourth place came in the hammer throw where she recorded a season-best toss of 144’ 00”.

Janey Helland took top honors in the long jump with a leap of 18’ 1”.  She also finished fifth in the high jump (4’ 11”) and seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.35).  Sarah Baker cleared 5’ 1” to win the high jump, while also finishing runner-up to Helland in the long jump with a mark of 16’ 11.25”.

The 4×400-meter relay team turned in the top performance on the track, taking first place with a time of 4:05.10.  Individually, Megan Lundgren led the way, placing third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.56.  Beth Hauer finished sixth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:30.70, and Brooke Beskau took seventh behind her with a time of 18:34.22.  Janie Briant added a seventh place finish in the 100-meter dash (13.39), and Abby Karl came in eighth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.61) to round out the track events.

Other top performers in the field events included Allyson Voss and Emily Ford.  Voss earned runner-up honors after clearing 11’ 1.75” in the pole vault, and Ford placed second with a toss of 36’ 10.25” in the shot put.

Megan Endresen notched three top-10 finishes in the meet.  She finished sixth in the hammer throw (136’ 10”), seventh in the shot (33’ 3.75”), and ninth in the discus (124’ 9”).  Nevada Wendlandt cleared 4’ 11” to finish fifth in the high jump, Holly Hoffman placed eighth in the pole vault (10’ 2”), and Laura Secor took eighth in the javelin (96’ 10”).

Select members of the Gustavus track and field team will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take part in the Drake Relays on April 28-30.  The rest the team will host the Drake Alternative on Saturday, April 30 in St. Peter, Minn.
