The Gustavus baseball team got strong pitching performances from Cody Sukalski in game one and Kellan Eurele in game two, but could not get on track offensively and were swept by St. Thomas by the scores of 4-1 and 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Tommies scored their four runs in game one in the first inning and their three runs in game two in the second inning, otherwise Sukalski and Euerle limited St. Thomas to just three hits and no runs in the other 12 innings .
In game one, the Tommies bunched together five hits and scored four runs in the bottom of the first, but after that Sukalski allowed only one hit and that was a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Gusties scored their run in the top of the sixth when Mike Holbrook led off with a single, advanced to third on Timmy Miller’s double and then scored on Taylor Fish’s infield groundout. Mitch Johnson picked up two hits in three at-bats in the game.
In game two, St. Thomas scored its three runs on three hits in the second inning, which included a two-run home run. The Tommies collected only one hit off Eurele the rest of the game. The Gusties had runners on first and second with no one out in the fifth, but could not pick up the key hit to get the runners across the plate. Euerle allowed just four hits in seven innings of work, while walking four and strking out one.
The Gusties will host MSU, Mankato on Monday afternoon at 3:30 pm at the Gustavus baseball field.
