Baseball Falls To Williams, Oberlin To Wrap Up Spring Break Trip Posted on April 4th, 2011 by

The Gustavus baseball team completed its 6-day, 10-game Spring Break Trip to Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday and unfortunately the Gusties dropped two games falling 13-8 to Williams in the morning and 9-8 in ten innings to Oberlin in the afternoon.  Gustavus completed its trip to Arizona with a record of 2-8.

In the first game of the day against Williams, the Ephs held a slim 6-5 lead through three innings, but broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning.  Gustavus scored four in the first inning, followed by single runs in the third and fourth innings and then added two more in the fifth.  The Gusties scored their eight runs on 14 hits, while Williams scored its 13 runs on 18 hits.  Taylor Fish led Gustavus as he went 4-for-4 and scored a run.  Scott Benjamin was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and Mitch Johnson was 2-for-4 with one RBI.  Bryce Bintzler suffered the loss on the mound for the Gusties as he allowed eight hits and five earned runs in two innings of work.  Matt Saemrow, Josh Funk, and Sean Minder also pitched for Gustavus.

In the second game against Oberlin, Gustavus held a 8-5 lead through eight innings, but the Yeoman scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at 8-8 and then scored the winning run in the bottom of the tenth to win 9-8.  Dave Tranvik, Benjamin, Tim Miller, Kellan Euerle, and Erik Sveen each picked up two hits for the Gusties who registered 12 hits in the game. Cody Sukalski hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.  Cody Sukalsk was the starting pitcher and he allowed five runs on 10 hits in four innings, while Tim Miller, who relieved Sukalski allowed seven hits in five innings allowing three runs (one earned).  Taylor Fish came in to pitch in the 10th and he was saddled with the loss allowing one run on two hits.  It was the third one-run loss of the week to Oberlin who had slipped past the Gusties 9-8 and 5-4 on Tuesday.
