The Gustavus men’s basketball team was outscored 40-25 in the second half at St. Olaf on Wednesday night and the result was an 80-64 loss to the Oles in Northfield. St. Olaf used a 25-9 run over the final eight minutes of the game to pull away from the Gusties and claim the convincing victory. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Gustavus and knocked the Gusties into third place in the MIAC with a record of 9-3. Seth Anderson led Gustavus with 14 points.
A Phil Wirtjes jumper at the 8:37 mark of the second half allowed the Gusties to pull within two points of the Oles at 55-53, however St. Olaf responded with a 14-5 run to take an 11-point lead at 69-58 with 4:12 left to play. Gustavus would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game. The Gusties shot a cool 34.6 percent (9-26) in the second half including 4-for-11 in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Seth Anderson scored 14 points to lead the Gusties. James Hill was the only other Gustavus player in doubles figures with 13 points.
The Gusties will travel to Moorhead to face Concordia on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
