For the second night in a row, the Gustavus men’s hockey team found itself having to play from behind, this time against of UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wis. on Saturday night. The Blue Devils got on the board early and often with five unanswered goals within the first 34:00 minutes of the game. UW-Stout would hold on for a 6-1 victory, improving to 10-5-0 on the season. Gustavus, suffering its second straight loss, falls to 9-5-1 overall.
UW-Stout outshot Gustavus 38-30 in the game. Unlike Friday’s game, power play goals were not the difference as all seven goals came at even strength. Gustavus was 0-for-4 on the power play on the night, and the Blue Devils were 0-for-1.
The Gusties were down 2-0 after the first period for the second straight night. David Larson scored the opening goal (1-0) in the sixth minute and Robb Haider added the second goal (2-0) with just four seconds left in the period.
Haider netted his second goal of the game at the 2:25 mark of the second period to put the Blue Devils up 3-0. Chales Lachance extended the lead to 4-0 less than three minutes later, and Justin Giles scored his first goal of the season at the 13:49 mark, putting UW-Stout up 5-0.
Dane Erickson got Gustavus on the board with less than a minute to play in the period on assists from Ryan Johnson and Andrew Peterson. It was Erickson’s fifth goal of the season.
Jason Cohen ended the night’s scoring with a goal :37 seconds into the third period, bringing the game to a final at 6-1.
Tom Lescovich was the winning goaltender, allowing one goal and making 29 saves. Tyler Venne suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 4-1-0. He allowed six goals and made 32 saves in a full 60 minutes.
The Gustavus men’s hockey team will look to rebound against Augsburg next weekend. The Gusties head back into their MIAC schedule for the first time since facing St. Thomas in early December. Friday night’s contest will be played at 7:05 p.m. in Minneapolis, and Saturday’s game will be held at 7:05 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
