Wirtjes And Geske Named December Student-Athletes Of The Month

Gustavus basketball players Phil Wirtjes and Molly Geske have been named Gustavus Student-Athletes of the Month following solid individual performances over the month of December.

Phil Wirtjes, December Student-Athlete of the Month, Men’s Basketball

Gustavus Adolphus senior wing Phil Wirtjes earned Gustavus December Student-Athlete of the Month honors after leading the men’s basketball team to a 4-1 overall record and 4-0 MIAC record within the month.  Wirtjes scored a total of 76 points (15.2 ppg) and brought down 27 rebounds (5.4 rpg), scoring in double figures four times.  Wirtjes scored a season/team/career-high 26 points against St. Olaf in a 74-66 victory on Dec. 6, going 7-for-13 from the field and 4-for-8 from behind the arc in the game.  He finished the month with a .481 (26-54) field goal shooting percentage and a .523 (11-21) three point shooting percentage, while hitting 13-of-14 free throws.

Wirtjes, a native of Des Moines, Iowa and product of the Academy of Holy Angels is currently averaging 14.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in 27.3 minutes.  Phil is a Health Fitness major and team captain for the men’s basketball team.

Molly Geske

Molly Geske, December Student-Athlete of the Month, Women’s Basketball

Gustavus Adolphus junior wing Molly Geske had one of the best months of her career for the Gustauvs women’s basketball team, scoring in double figures in all five contests to earn Student-Athlete of the Month honors for December.  The Gusties went 3-2 with a pair of three-point-losses to MIAC title contenders Concordia (75-72) and Saint Benedict (64-61).  Within the month, Geske scored a total of 83 points (16.6 ppg) and had 21 boards (4.2 rpg).  She was 28-for-63 (.444) from the floor and 8-for-17 (.471) from three point range.  Geske, who is currently the top free throw shooter in the MIAC, was a near perfect 19-for-20 at the charity stripe in December.

Molly Geske is a graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall and a native of Mendota Heights, Minn.  She currently ranks fifth in the MIAC in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game and shooting .417 (40-96) from the field.  Geske, who earned All-Conference honors last season, is a Public Accounting major and team captain.
