Gustavus Adolphus men’s swimmer Billy Schultze has been named MIAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for his efforts at the SJU Triangular held on Saturday in Collegeville, Minn. Schultze recorded two individual event wins while helping Gustavus compile 108 points on one victory and two second place finishes in the relay events. The Gusties took first place with 1252 points at the meet.
Schultze, a native of Mankato, Minn., was dominant in both breaststroke races. He won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.28 and the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.31. Both performances are the second best in the MIAC this season. His time in the 200 was nearly ten seconds faster than the second place finisher from Luther College.
Schultze swam the breaststroke leg of the first place 200 medley relay (1:38.94), turning in a split of 27.61, the second fastest among all competing breaststroke portions. He also contributed to the second place finishes of 200 (1:29.67) and 400 freestyle (3:21.28) relays. In the 400 free relay, Schultze swam the fourth leg in 48.37, the fastest recorded split of the race.
The Gustavus swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool on Dec. 3-4 when they compete at the Falcon Invite held on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.
