The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team suffered a 186-114 setback in its first MIAC dual of the season to St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon in Northfield, Minn. The Gusties totaled five event wins and 18 top-three finishes at the meet.
Whitaker Davis was the top Gustavus swimmer with three individual event victories. Davis won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:42.81, the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:46.87, and the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.25.
Matt Van Fossen and Sam DeFranco also contributed wins. Van Fossen took the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.09, while DeFranco won the 50 freestyle (22.11) and placed third in the 100 freestyle.
Billy Schultze, Paul Kirihara, and Ben Stewart recorded a combined six top-three finishes. Schultze finished runner-up in both the 100 (1:01.00) and 200 breastroke (2:13.48) while taking third in the 200 IM. Kirihara added a pair of second place finishes in the 100 (54:85) and 200 backstroke (2:01.70), and Stewart took second in the 200 freestyle (1:51.41). Zach Nachtsheim placed third in the 50 freestyle, as did John Rice in the 500 freestyle, and Sam Hanson placed third in both the one and three-meter diving.
The Gustavus 200 medley relay team of Kirihara, Schultze, Van Fossen, and DeFranco placed second with a time of 1:37.59, as the 400 free relay team consisting of DeFranco, Craig Nordquist, Stewart, and Davis also finished second with a time of 3:20.20.
The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team will be back in the pool on Saturday, Nov. 20 at SJU/CSB Invitational set for 1:00 p.m. in Collegeville, Minn.
