The Gustavus volleyball team lost its MIAC match with St. Ben’s 0-3 on Wednesday night at Gus Young Court in St. Peter. The set scores were 20-25, 19-25, 18-25. The Gusties are now 7-16 overall and 1-7 in MIAC play, while St Ben’s is now 17-8 overall and 6-2 in league play.
The Gusties stayed close in the first set, but the Blazers never trailed on their way to the 25-20 victory. Gustavus pulled to within two at 16-18, but St. Ben’s scored seven of the final 11 points to close out the set.
In the second set, the Gusties jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and maintained their lead throughout much of the set, however the Blazers rallied to take the lead for good at 17-16 and pulled away for the 25-19 win.
In the third and final set, Gustavus tied the score at 9-9, but St. Ben’s scored four of the next five points to take a 13-10 lead and never looked back as they closed out the match by winning the third set 25-18.
Angela Ahrendt led the Gustavus attack as she recorded 12 kills in 26 attempts with one error for an impressive .423 attack percentage.
It was senior night at Gustavus and the Gusties honored their three seniors – Jenny Ewert, Janey Helland, and Nicki Ainsworth for their dedication and hard work over the past four seasons.
It was also Dig Pink Night and the Gustavus volleyball program wore pink uniforms and raised money for the Side Out Foundation, which supports the battle against breast cancer.
