Men’s Soccer Battles Saint John’s To 0-0 Tie Posted on September 25th, 2010 by

The Gustavus men’s soccer team threw everything they could at Saint John’s on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter out-shooting the Johnnies 21-5 (including 6-0 in the two overtimes), while also holding an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the Saint John’s defense shut the Gusties out and the result was a 0-0 tie in double-overtime.  The Gusties are now 3-3-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the MIAC.

In the first half, the Gusties held an 8-4 advantage in shots, but both teams had several quality chances on goal. Each goalkeeper came up with three quality saves to keep the game scoreless.

In the second half, Gustavus put some significant pressure on the Johnnie defense and recorded a 7-1 advantage in shots, but Matt Anderson and Mike Sikich combined to make four big saves for Saint John’s (Anderson played the first 67:51 and Sikich played the final 52:09).

The Gusties continued to put the pressure on Saint John’s in the overtime sessions out-shooting the Johnnies 6-0, but to no avail as Gustavus unable to put the ball in the Johnnie net and the result was a 0-0 tie.

Luke Strom played all 110 minutes in the net for Gustavus making three saves. For the Johnnies Matt Anderson registered six saves and Mike Sikich recorded two saves.

Gustavus will host Saint Mary’s on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 4:00 pm.
